I did a visit at AU a few weeks ago when back on the East Coast for a conference. The campus is located in the suburbs of D.C. not too far from Georgetown, and an easy metro ride from Capitol Hill. The American Campus has an awesome main quad, surrounded by lots of different buildings, there were lots of students out on the lawns studying and playing instruments, some had booths set up, advertising clubs and service projects, it was an awesome atmosphere. Because of it’s location, American places a big emphasis on advocacy and social justice, which definitely prevalent in the list of majors, with an entire building dedicated to international service. If you look at the event bulletin board in the Student Center, it’s overflowing with activities like concerts, discussion group, outdoor trips, volunteer opportunities, you name it. The environment is definitely competitive, with only a 35.1 % acceptance rate, but it’s also welcoming. I got the sense that kids were really happy and excited to be at American. If you’re looking for an active, challenging, mid-size school with an international focus, I’d definitely check it out.
