Never in a million years would I have expected my first year of high school to be this tumultuous. It took a lot to get to that point– hundreds of nights spent studying, rehearsing, and burning out. However, no matter how long this year has been, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. For my incoming freshman, here are some tips to help you survive your first year of high school.
- Form good relationships with your teachers. Good relationships and friendships are key in high school. It’s important to form strong bonds with anyone, but especially with teachers. A fun and supportive teacher can turn a totally boring class into the best you’ve ever taken. Even a simple “how are you?” can change a lot.
- Study. I cannot stress enough that studying is the foundation of your grade. A good study session can do wonders for your grades. Most classes allow you to retake for 100% credit, so really take advantage of that. Stay on top of your grades and prioritize them. Never rely on others for notes– just do them yourself.
- Try new things. I know it’s incredibly cliché, but trying something new always helps form new hobbies and relationships. It’s never too late to start! Join sports, clubs, performing arts, whatever– if you don’t like it, do something else. It’s an easy way to be involved in your community and stay engaged.
- Find a good circle. It took me a very long time to find my people. On top of that, it should really go without saying: be kind. You don’t have to like every single person. Not every single person is going to like you. No matter what it is, always be kind to everyone you meet. Chances are, you might not know what someone else is going through.
- Organize. Keep all of your supplies in a binder, folder, or notebook. A big regret I have from my freshman year is always losing assignments and notes due to my poor organizational skills. It’ll save you so much time and stress if you just put them away neatly.
- Dont procrastinate. If procrastination were a crime, I’d be sent away for life. Procrastination is the bane of any scholar’s existence, so rather than putting it off, get all assignments or projects done as soon as you can. Don’t wait till the last minute or make any excuses– it’s not worth your time or your teachers’ time.
- Be yourself. By far, this is the most important rule. I know it’s cringe to say, but don’t bother getting swept away with anyone else. Embrace your quirkiness. Embrace your oddities. Embrace who you are, not who someone else is. I know it’s tempting to fit into a mold of what’s trending, but never be afraid to be you.
Freshman year can be incredibly daunting. Only a year ago, I stood in your same position– afraid, excited, and nervous; anxiously awaiting what high school would bring. At this point, you only have three more years of school left, so make the most of it. Make new friends. Try everything, at least once. Do so many extracurriculars that your head explodes. Most of all, never take this time in your life for granted. It’s the first and last time you’ll ever be a high school freshman, so you might as well do it all. I wish you all the best of luck!
Sincerely, Emily
