Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1982. Members are Anthony Kiedis as the vocalist, Flea (Michael Peter Balzary) as bass, John Frusciante playing guitar, and Chad Smith on drums. Their music consists of alternative rock, funk, punk rock, hard rock, hip hop, and psychedelic rock.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold over 120 million records worldwide. Making them one of the top-selling bands of all time. They have also won three Grammy awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and in 2022 received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
History: Anthony Kiedis, Ilelel Slovak, Flea, and Jack Irons were all classmates at Fairfax High School. Their first performance together was when they were around the age of 19-20, and as a band, they performed on December 16th, 1982, at the Gradia room club
On Hollywood Boulevard, to a crowd of 30. At this time, Slovak and Irons were more committed to another former band they were in called “What is this?”
They had changed their names in March, 1983, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and started playing many shows in Los Angeles; six songs from these former shows were then on their first demo tape.
The band released their debut album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, in August 1984. Airplay on college radios and MTV helped them build a fun base. The album then sold 300,000 copies, and then eventually went on tour, performing 60 shows in 64 days.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their second album called, Freaky Styley (1985), which was produced by funk musician George Clinton. The band used heroin throughout their whole music career, and while recording the album, it had a big influence on the lyrics and music.
Drug Use
The main band member who struggled with addiction was Anthony Kiedis. He’s discussed his battle with addiction/drug abuse and his road to sobriety. Anthony Kiedis states in an interview with Joe Ragon, “It was finding the thing that I thought was going to make me well… but in reality it was just killing me.”
The band has a much better relationship with Clinton than with Gill, another music producer, but the album “Freaky Styley” was released on August 16th, 1985, which also achieved a little success, but failed to make any impression on any chart. Despite the lack of success the band had, they were satisfied with Freaky Skyley.
Throughout the time the band was together, they eventually lost a guitarist, leading to a possible band breakup. In the following years (Frusciontes’ departure), his heroin addiction had left him in poverty and near death. Flea continued Frusciante to enter Cas Encinas Drug Rehabilitation center in eastern Pasadena, California, in January 1998. His addiction left him with scarring on his arms, a restricted nose, and dental implants following oral infection.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers had their breakthroughs but continued to grow throughout their career. Even with the addiction, some struggled more than others, but overall had an influence on some addicts, which suggests that there is a possibility for change, but you have to choose that.
