We had the chance to interview Mr. Omer, an AmeriCorps service member working at Forest Grove High School for the past year and a half. I had the chance to ask Mr. Omer some questions, just to get to know him a little better.

Where are you originally from?

“I am originally from the St. Louis Area. I grew up and attended high school there.”

Where did you go to college what did you major in?

“I attended the University of Missouri. I graduated in 2015 and majored in journalism with an emphasis on strategic communication.”

Why the Pacific Northwest?

“Since I graduated in 2015, I joined the AmeriCorps and I am an official service member. My initial intentions were to move to an island, preferably Guam or Hawaii with the AmeriCorps but unfortunately, since so many people wanted to go there I didn’t get a callback. My profile matches perfectly with the program in Oregon so that’s the reason why I came out to Oregon. “

What is your occupation here at Forest Grove?

“I tutor students, specifically with math and reading. Last year when there were two service members, I had an emphasis on math tutoring. I also coach unified basketball.”

What are your hobbies?

“I have many interests, Oregon being so nature oriented, I always love to go on hikes and travel around the state. Besides those, I love working with music. I learned how to play the drums so I perform with the math teacher band, with Ms. Brosig and Mr. Scott. I also really enjoy rapping. On the recent School trip to Europe, Mr. Stapp and I had an “open via night” on the bus and it was amazing! Another hobby includes playing basketball with a couple of guys at Verbort. Unfortunately, my term in Forest Grove comes to an end this year as my service with the AmeriCorps will end.”

What’s next after Forest Grove?

“I will be moving across the country and attend Grad school, at Georgetown University.”

After having a chance to have a chat with Mr. Omer, one thing stands clear, he is passionate about what he does and cares about his students. It is unfortunate that Mr. Omer will be leaving but at the same time, we should be happy that he is continuing his dreams and aspirations at Georgetown University in Washington DC, pursuing his future career goals.
