For over 60 years, Spider-Man has been one of the most well-loved, received, and iconic superheroes of all time, and his popularity continues to grow. While many other superheroes are shown to be perfect and live perfect lives, Spider-Man stands out because of how real and relatable he is in contrast. He’s able to connect with audiences because of his positive personality, his hardships, and his ability to overcome these difficult challenges; these are the reasons why he is so well-loved. One of the big reasons he soared in popularity was his origin story through the life of Peter Parker.
He is not introduced as this strong, rich, and powerful person, he’s just a regular nerdy teenager barely able to make it through life. He worries about fitting in, cramming in homework, and helping his only family he has left, Uncle Ben and Aunt May. This is what makes him such a relatable and humble character in contrast to different heroes like Iron Man or Batman, who are shown to have completely perfect lives from the beginning of their respective stories. Many fans see themselves in Spider-Man because of the problems he deals with, whether it’s stress, balancing his hero and normal life, or even the way he pushes himself to get through difficult situations. All of these things about him make him feel real, and the way he always chooses to see things with a positive mindset makes him the perfect representation of what a hero should be. Another reason for his popularity is his shared vulnerable moment with his Uncle Ben, parting ways and sharing advice and wisdom to Peter after Ben was shot, “With great power comes great responsibility.” This message doesn’t only apply to Spider-Man or other heroes, it is a universal message that can apply to anyone who hears it, which is what makes it such a good line. It teaches the audience that if you have the power and ability to make a difference, you’re responsible for doing it the right way. Spider-Man doesn’t fight crime for attention or anything else but because he believes it’s the right thing to do. He doesn’t ever expect anything in return, which also makes him a very humble character who just wants to do good things. All of this has inspired fans to be like Spider-Man and do things for the right reasons, which is why he’s also so influential, especially to younger fans. The way he overcomes obstacles is also a reason he’s so loved. At the beginning of his story, when he gets his powers and eventually loses Uncle Ben, it doesn’t motivate him to use his powers for vengeance or killing Uncle Ben’s killer. Instead, it motivates him to become a hero who prevents tragedies and protects others instead of seeking revenge. Another big reason the character of Spider-Man is so loved is that anyone can be Spider-Man. There are many stories of different Spider-Men like Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Miguel O’Hara. All of these characters might not have the same story, but what they do have in common is that they teach people to do the right thing, and something that’s so good about there being a lot of different Spider-Men is that their stories can reach people all over the world who might not like one specific Spider-Man’s story.
In conclusion, Spider-Man remains one of the most popular heroes because of his bravery and his relatability. With there being a lot of different Spider-Men, more people can see themselves as a superhero. That’s what makes Spider-Man more than just a regular hero, he’s someone who becomes an inspiration for people to do the right thing.
