From starring in her own Nickelodeon show to appearing in some of your favorite young adult movies, and then quitting acting to pursue a career in law, Amanda Bynes has had an interesting career. Things looked good for Bynes in the early 2000s. But as her career progressed and she opened up to a bigger audience, other than children, that’s when things started to go downhill.
Amanda Bynes, born 1983 on April 3rd started her acting career at 7 years old in a Nestle candy commercial. She was later scouted at a comedy camp at the Laugh Factory in LA. This allowed her to then star in Nickelodeon’s “All That” for 4 seasons starting in 1996. At 13, Bynes got the opportunity to star in her own show, a skit-based comedic series, “The Amanda Show.” It ran for 3 seasons and did very well, becoming a Nickelodeon classic.
After being under the Nickelodeon franchise for most of her childhood, Bynes wanted to branch out. She tried to widen her audience to more than children. So in 2002, she became a co-star in the WIB network series “What I Like About You.” This show introduced her to an older audience, thereby widening her fan base beyond children. Then, at 15, Bynes transitioned from TV shows to movies, starring in the 2002 film “Big Fat Liar. In the following years, Bynes went on to act in more successful films. Titles like “What a Girl Wants” in 2003, “She’s the Man” in 2006, and even “Hairspray” in 2007 are all very memorable movies from her. But throughout all the roles Bynes had had and her major success up to this point in film, one thing was clear. Amanda Bynes was being quickly typecast to play the same kind of character in all of her movies. All her roles, from “all that to “Hairspray, had the same characteristics. A bubbly teen girl who was cute, quirky, funny, and somewhat clumsy. This was a character that Bynes could easily portray and do well. But it wasn’t the only one she wanted to play. Later on, Bynes revealed the struggles she faced while filming some of her later movies. “She’s the Man,” being one of them, is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s play “Twelfth Night,” where her character Viola dresses up as her twin brother to continue playing high school soccer. She ends up falling for a teammate played by co-star Channing Tatum. Bynes revealed to Paper Magazine that she abused Adderall for years after seeing herself as a boy on “She’s the Man,” giving her body issues. She said that at the time she read in magazines that adderall was the new “skinny pill,” and Bynes said once she started taking Adderall, it got to a point she’d even chew the tablets for a stronger high, but it didn’t help her image of how she looked.
Finally, in Bynes’s last film, 2010 Easy A, she continued to struggle with her mental health and substance abuse. Bynes later revealed in a 2018 Paper Magazine interview, “I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it. I was high on marijuana when I saw that, but for some reason, it really started to affect me. I don’t know if it was drug-induced psychosis or what, but it affected my brain in a different way than it affects other people. It absolutely changed my perception of things.” The pressures of fame, as well as the things she did to cope with them, took a toll on her mental health, leading her to leave entertainment completely. Her addictions were one of the main reasons she retired because they made it difficult to memorize lines and worsened her already low self-esteem.
After the filming of Easy A, she landed a role in the movie “Hall Pass”, but she ultimately quit the filming because of how difficult it was to focus, not enough on the script, and too much on her appearance. In the years following Bynes’ retirement, she publicly struggled with substance abuse and legal trouble, including DUIs, drug possession, and reckless driving. In July 2023, she was put on involuntary psychiatric hold after starting a fire in a stranger’s driveway. By February of 2014, CNN reported she struck a plea deal for a 2012 DUI, instead pleading no contest to reckless driving, and spent time in a rehab treatment facility. By November 2018, Bynes had celebrated 4 years sober. But her recovery didn’t last long. She had to check herself into rehab for stress-related relapses in January of 2019, according to TMZ. Afterwards, she went silent for a while until recently, when she’s been updating her social media. From posting TikToks about new tattoos and hair changes to other media, she decides to share.
Today, Bynes is lying low while trying to live a healthy life. She’ll occasionally update her fans on social media but chooses to lay low to protect her peace. But her influence on teen girls has not changed. With her movies still being classics to this day, many people continue to rewatch them for comfort.
