Someone Great, written by Jennifer Robinson, a witty Rom-Com starring Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanfield, is a movie I can’t get enough of. This movie is about Jenny, a music journalist in New York City who was recently offered her dream job with Rolling Stone in San Francisco. She experiences a horrible breakup with her 9-year relationship with Nate, partly because she is moving far away. The movie goes through flashbacks of her and Nate’s relationship, freshly out of the breakup, while she spends her last couple of days in the city with her two besties, Blair and Erin. The reason I keep going back to this movie is because of the empowering message it ends with. She ends up picking her dream career over a man. It’s a perfect movie for when you’re feeling a little sad but also need a good laugh. It also has an amazing soundtrack that truly takes this movie to the next level.
Let’s talk about the soundtrack, A.K.A. the perfect soundtrack for a movie. It starts with Lorde’s song “Supercut,” as Jenny, the main character, is sitting, waiting at the subway, going back to her first memories of Nate. This song is a perfect representation of watching you and your ex’s memories through a phone, just like Jenny was. We then move into the most iconic scene with the most iconic song to go with it: “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo. The ultimate hype girl song lifts Jenny’s energy while she’s singing along to it in her kitchen. Another song that is perfect in this film is “Mansard Roof” by Vampire Weekend. As another memory of Nate and Jen plays when they very first meet at a college party, it pairs perfectly with the scene and emotion. Another honorable mention is “Charcoal Baby” by Blood Orange, another great song choice that elevated this movie’s soundtrack. The movie also features the two lyric geniuses Mitski and Phoebe Bridgers. I think it’s a perfect match for a sad breakup movie because of the emotion and lyrics of both songs put in the movie. Phoebe Bridgers tends to emotionally impact her listeners, which is why I think the writer incorporated her music into this movie. On the other hand, we have another hype song from Lil’ Kim, which is a perfect example of the uplifting message of this movie.
Another reason I keep going back is that it’s the perfect mix of a sad, witty romance story, but also has an amazing presentation of girlhood and uplifting female friendships. A song I cannot go without mentioning is “Dreaming of You” by Selena; this scene is absolute perfection. Jenny and her friends are at the minimart, and this song comes on. Jenny has a sad moment with the song, then leads into a full-blown karaoke session with her besties. Another great song that was used was “Moon River” by Frank Ocean. His music is modern-day breakup classics that many listen to. I feel like it was a perfect song to connect to people watching this movie. The last couple of songs are from Jessie Reyez, an absolute queen in my opinion. She appears in the film during the iconic music event, Neon Classic, where things very first began with Jenny and Nate, but also where they completely ended.
The main reason this movie is constantly being played is that there are so many good songs that I love, and there aren’t many movies where I know almost every song played. Even if you have never heard some of the songs on this soundtrack, I think it is an amazing movie to watch if you’re into Rom-Coms and craving a romance story. It could also allow you to dive into new music and expand your taste of listening.
