An Update on the Timbers Season

An Update on the Timbers Season

David Tecum, Writer

The Portland Timbers have gone from runners up in MLS last season to the worst team in the entire league. The Timbers have been nothing short of terrible conceding 17 goals in 6 games and only scoring 6. The Timbers have been trying to solve their attacking issues by attempting to sign a big name forward. All of their attempts have been fruitless so far and they only have until the 7th of May to make a deal happen. The defense has been absolutely terrible conceding 17 goals and by the time of publishing will probably be worse they attempted to find a replacement for veteran center back Liam Ridgewell but the replacement has only played in two games and while playing his only real impact was giving away a penalty in a match against the LA Galaxy. Another factor is that the Timbers will not play a home game until the first of June because of Stadium renovations at Providence Park. In recent years the Timbers form away from home was not very good in 2016. They did not win a single away game in 2017, the Timbers were fantastic and placed first in the west, and in 2018 they didn’t win a game until their first home game.

The Timbers attack has been a big problem scoring 6 goals in 6 would be something to be proud of if you were an individual player but when it’s your whole team it is pretty disgraceful. The Timbers have not dealt with the striker issue after Fanendo Adi (second highest goalscorer in club history) was sold to Cincinnati Fc and loanee Samuel Armenteros returned to his parent club, Benevento. They have a young 22-year-old striker Jeremy Ebobisse who is still fairly young and isn’t ready to start every game and confidence lacking Lucas Melano. Also, the Timbers players that performed extremely well last year look slow and are having to do too much defending and aren’t able to attack as much as they would like. The Timbers have been heavily linked with lots of talents, most recently they have been linked with one of the top goalscorers in the Mexican league, Brian Fernandez, who has scored 17 goals in 31 games, many people are saying this deal has already been done.

UPDATE: The won a game against Columbus 3-1 they played very positively and the goal they gave away was a silly mistake from the Portland goalkeeper Jeff Anntinnela. So yes their not the worst team in the league anymore.
