Maiden of the Stars

Featuring Mythologies

Polytheism: the belief in various gods or goddesses. Greek, Roman, Egyptian. There are many ancient cultures that believe in polytheistic religions. Each week we will be discussing a certain deity and some of its counterparts. Now let’s look to the stars.

Astraea, the Star Maiden, originates from Greek mythology. She was the goddess of innocence. Living with humans throughout the Golden Age of Man, she was unimpressed with the misery and wickedness the Iron Age brought about. Later on, she deserted Earth. When she left Earth and moved to the stars, Astraea transformed into the constellation Virgo. The constellation lying near Virgo in the skies, Libra, is the symbolic representation of the Greek goddess Dike, who was close with Astraea.

Legends say that when Astraea returns to Earth, a utopia will be upon humans and human suffering will end.

In Roman mythology she is also referred to as Astrea, however, she is also considered the Roman goddess of Justice.

Egyptian mythology doesn’t coordinate with Greek and Roman mythology, therefore there is not a counterpart of Astraea in Egyptian mythology.

Now back to Earth, let’s hope the stars and justice will be on our side.
