Equal Pay in Sports?

Liliana Jimenez, Writer

Some people may argue that some sports need to have equal pay according to how much more or fewer men and women get paid, but really,  all athletes make most of their revenue from fans. The number of money athletes gets paid is depending on how many buy ticket sales, viewership, and Merchandise.

Therefore, if most people think that men get paid more than women they should start buying more merchandise or tickets so they can have higher revenue.

Athletes get paid differently for every sport but in the article adelphi.edu the sports basketball, golf, soccer, baseball, and tennis all make their money from 15% to almost 100% more than female athletes. For example, the WNBA has far less revenue than the NBA, and also less corporate sponsorship and media viewership than the NBA.

Although there is a different pay structure for every sport just looking at the 5 most popular sports (basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, and tennis), female athletes constantly make less than male athletes in sports, and the pay disparity has not changed from 2010 to 2019.

Some way we can help fix equal pay in sports is to implement pay transparency. What this does is it gives them an understanding of why they are paid what they are getting paid, and it would also allow women to earn and would make women aware if they are making less than men. The U.S soccer team is currently working on trying to get equal pay, and women’s national team players agreed to settle an equal pay lawsuit. This would mean that the athletes will receive $24 million, and a pledge from the soccer federation to equalize pay for the men’s and women’s national teams. (New York Times)

Some reasons why women and men should get paid the same is because; women work just as hard as their male counterparts and should get paid the same for the exact same job, so they don’t have to worry about financial problems”. They should also get paid the same because it would make it harder for women to be able to give their families the supplies they need like food and clothes. It would also just make it difficult to take care of themselves. Not only would paying women the same as men make it more equal would also be sending a powerful message about gender equality and making a huge impact on female athletes because of how much more of a value they have on their worth.

Some benefits of equal pay are; the equal pay act protects both men and women, this is because it would cover the cost of salary, bonuses, life insurance, and benefits. Having equal pay in sports can also break down harmful stereotypes and rigid gender roles that other people make and continue to make women less likely to take up sporting activities. The main goal of gender equality would be to have equal rights and the power to shape their own lives and contribute to the development of society.
