Are Marvel movies going down in quality?

As of now, the MCU has been in its 4th phase, which started with the Disney plus show “Wanda Vision” and the film “Black Widow” both released in 2021. Just like the previous phases, phase 4 has an important role in the MCU, which is showing the trauma the characters in the universe deal with after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Although Marvel had a good start with the introduction of the 4th phase and the content they presented us throughout 2021, with films such as SpiderMan: No Way Home being such a success, there has been a huge drop in quality in the films later given throughout 2022. Marvel has released 2 movies so far as well as 3 shows on Disney plus so far in phase 4. Each show and movie that has been released so far this year has a time gap of 2-3 months, with both movies and shows being released around the same time. You’ll notice that Marvel has been continuously pumping out content and is continuing to do so with the end of phase 4 being near. As each film is being released, the content that Marvel is putting out has fans mixed, with some long-term fans being disappointed in the content Marvel has been producing because of the way Marvel is handling these films. The problem with the content being put out is that it is starting to become very generic. The whole superhero genre as a whole in movies has become repetitive especially for Marvel because their recent movies fall into that category. A superhero movie isn’t generic just because it’s superhero, if done right, you can make a superhero movie unique and special. What makes a superhero movie generic such as Marvel’s recent films is reusing formulas. Recently Marvel has had the need to put unnecessary humor in their movies when there really shouldn’t be any because it ruins moments that are meant to be serious and distracts us from the actual point of the scene or even the movie. A recent example is a film such as Thor: Love and Thunder. Many critics of Rotten Tomatoes claim that the humor was cheesy and unnecessary. One critic claims that “Taika Waititi’s Thor Love and Thunder was disappointing of godlike proportions, featuring a villain that deserved a much better film”, which is something a bunch of other critics agrees on. The main complaint with the audience is that the humor ruined most of the characters, specifically Thor, which is not a good thing because he’s the main character of the Movie. One audience member claims “Not as bad as I was expecting. I liked the storyline, the villain, lady Thor, and Val… I wish they’d take some of the dumb comedy out. Laughs are good. But the entire tone is corny and it’s not a good corny. Thor seems to be constantly portrayed as a dumb brute.. while I don’t expect Him to be Tony stark, it would be nice to get back to a somewhat serious tone.. the formula is getting old. But all in all, I enjoyed it. And I’ll watch it again”. This review was given by THE O, and they gave the film 4 stars. With this comes another problem most notable in Marvel’s 2022 films, the effects (CGI). A lot of fans claim that Marvel’s CGI in their recent films is probably the worst by far in the whole lifetime of the film franchise. At first, this started off as a minor problem. Audience members noticed lesser moments that included poor CGI in films such as Avengers: Endgame and Black Widow but didn’t mind it too much because of how well the movie was. But as time went on it got worse as each film would release up until now, and it started to become more noticeable to the point that people couldn’t ignore it. Films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and some shows like She-Hulk are examples of this. This is disappointing since those films have such a huge budget but can’t even do the bare minimum of releasing quality content, especially in this day and age. For example, an article released on CBR, claims that Thor: Love and Thunder had a budget of $250 million dollars. Compared to the last Thor movie released, Thor: Ragnarok which had a budget of $180 million dollars, which is a $70 million dollars difference. All in all, fans feel like they deserve better quality in the films that they’re given especially given the fact that Marvel has huge budgets for their films. Despite all of these problems, the only thing Marvel fans can do is wait and hope that future releases are better in quality and content as phase 4 is coming to an end as the next couple of films will be wrapping it.
