Back in March 2019, a bill in Alabama was floating around surrounding abortions.  More specifically, making abortions illegal, regardless of whether the cause of pregnancy was rape or incestuous.    Many were hurt, angry, and felt hopeless for the people of Alabama. Some went as far as to say they felt that their rights to their own body were being stripped away.  Many women and men spoke out on the banning of abortion, including Staci Fox, CEO and President of Planned Parenthood, who said, “Banning abortion does not stop abortion. It stops safe abortion.”

Eric Johnston, an attorney with the Alabama Pro-Life Coalition, who helped draft the bill shows that he knows almost absolutely nothing about pregnancies by saying, “a man and woman can have sex and you can take her straight to a clinic and determine an egg and sperm came together.”  When as a matter of fact, most sensitive pregnancy tests cannot detect pregnancy until about a week after fertilization, making this claim completely irrelevant and incorrect.

For doctors that do perform abortions, President Donald Trump says that they should be punished. Now, this makes people wonder, does this mean the women are punished as well? Trump, says that women should be punished during an interview with Chris Matthews.  Matthews debating with Trump saying, “I don’t believe in punishing anybody for having an abortion… I think it’s a woman’s choice,” when Trump says that it goes against what Chris’s [Catholic] church, Matthews responds with “I have a view — and a moral view.  But I believe we live in a free country, and I don’t want to live in a country so fascistic that it could stop a person from making that decision.” Making it clear that believes the person that is pregnant should be the one making the decision instead of the government.

Abortion is a very sensitive and serious matter and shouldn’t really be dealt with by the government.  People often use “My body, my choice” to say that nobody but them should have a right to control their body.  Having rights to your own body is ideal if or when you get pregnant. When the government does more to control whether or not you can have an abortion, things can get messy.  If a woman had a miscarriage, she would be pulled into an investigation, where they would be looking into if someone gave her an illegal abortion, just to be sure and to show that they have control over her.

Though some bills titled the “heartbeat bills” like the one in Georgia allow abortions up to the detection of a heartbeat.  This all seems great until you realize that people don’t even realize they’re pregnant because they think it’s a late period, not a pregnancy.

Do you think all states should have an abortion ban? Should we keep abortions for all states? Where do you stand on this issue?
