A Beautiful View

A Beautiful View

Luis Martinez, Writer

There’s a man who is well known for drawing landscapes with only his memory,  a man who had the ability to draw New York City with only looking at it for a certain amount of time. His name is Stephen Wiltshire, a man who became one of the few members of the Order Of The British Empire, which basically means he is rewarded for his works of art and has become a well-known artist in the UK.

He began working on the drawing on October 11, and worked almost non-stop for five days until Sunday

Though he was born with talent, Stephen was also born with constraints. He was limited to what he could say because he was mute, meaning he was unable to speak normally, later he was diagnosed with autism. However, Stephen discovered his talent at the age of eight when it is said he started drawing animals and cars. At the age of ten, we had come to find out that he had drawn many London landscapes and sorted the names by letter. He called this the “London alphabet.” Because of his disability, some instructors from his school may have taken his art supplies and in return, they got a word from Stephen. “Paper.”

With some research, I came to find out his teachers had an interest in him, and they later published a volume of his early drawings. Stephen had drawn over fifty detailed drawings of buildings, landscapes, skylines, vehicles and much more. Little did Stephen know, he’d soon become someone on a helicopter drawing the beautiful view he sees below him. And you’d think he’d take a camera with him to look at later for his drawing, but no. He draws it all from the mind, his memory is his camera.

Istanbul recreated in the memory of an English artist

He may look like those artists who draw the same thing over and over. But every artist has their own sketchbook, and that includes Stephen. It is said he draws loved ones and more than just buildings and vehicles. Fun fact: he draws more people than buildings in his private sketchbook. Stephen had his own exhibition and in just five days, more than one hundred thousand people came to the event, which was an attendance record in the history of their country.

Stephen truly is talented, he had his problems and got through them pretty quickly. Alone from the start, to a well known popular artist in the UK. It doesn’t really affect you until you start paying attention to their future. Stephen started as a lonely kid with only paper and a father who wasn’t there for him, and changed to a grown man drawing over paper that’s bigger than us.

Though many have amazing talents relating to art, Stephen definitely has the right to call himself a talented artist. Stephen is now 44 years of age and is still pursuing his career. Though he doesn’t tell many, he plays the piano fairly well and sings as well, seems he has more talents than just one. He now lives with his mother and he believes his most prized possession is his talent with art. He believes to just do what you’re good at, and that’s exactly what he did.

The entire experience culminated with a signing ceremony at the Empire State Building on Monday night
