The Little Mermaid is a movie that originated in the year 1836 by Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen was known for creating plenty of movies, which have led to now being some of the most famous Disney movies that children watch almost every day. He started this out in the fifth era, the Disney Renaissance. At this time, this took plenty of retelling and restating stories that had been made way even before this era happened. He is credited for movies like Mulan and even more stories like Frozen and Frozen II. This movie was shown to represent a little mermaid, Ariel, who desperately wanted to live on land. This movie became one of the most beloved Disney films.
This movie has a big background, it has a lot more that went into it than what people can imagine. It starts with a good scene of underwater sea life where the Sea King lives with all of the ocean creatures. There are beautiful surroundings and more. He and his queen lived in the same kingdom together while having six different mermaid daughters. Shortly after they had all six of their kids, the Queen died, and the Sea King’s mother came back to the kingdom and helped watch over the six mermaids. The youngest daughter, Ariel, was always the most curious and open-minded about the ground above and what it could lead to. After years of asking her grandmother, her grandma admitted the life of the land above, but said she had to wait five years till then. Throughout those years, all of the older mermaids went above ground and came back with all of this new information about music, humans, food, environment, and more. They were able to go above water whenever they wished after they all passed the age of fifteen.
Now that it came to Ariel’s turn, she went above water and saw all these wonderful things her sisters had talked about before. But as she also noticed, she saw a really handsome prince, but he was drowning in the water. Ariel went to save the young prince, but once she came upon water to help the young man, she had to hurry back into the water and hide from all of the humans who came to help. After that, the prince had woken up but had no idea who the little mermaid was, so as sad as she was, she dove back into the deep waters. From then on, the mermaid would visit the prince’s palace from so far away. She ended up becoming almost attached to this human, even though she didn’t really know who he was, she still wanted to know him. As she talked to her grandmother, she was brought up after the mermaids passed after 300 years. Their souls don’t live on until they meet a man.
After that discussion, Ariel ended up in the dark sea, where no one would want to go, seeing dead coral or even bones of dead humans. This was the palace of Ursula, this was the evil witch who always had something scary. After a while of talking, Ursula was able to help Ariel meet her dream man by cutting off her tongue and even taking her blood at that point. Shortly after saying goodbye to her palace without explanation, Ariel was so desperate that she said yes and took the potion, and next thing she knew, she grew a pair of legs. Shortly after, she came up to shore and ended up meeting the prince. But the only thing she was missing was her singing voice, and she was so sad because she wished she could show the prince the beauty of her singing voice. After spending countless hours together, the prince just couldn’t remember who exactly saved him from drowning, and he was hoping she would just show up. From then on, the prince couldn’t call Ariel his wife, only knowing he had an arranged marriage with another woman from another palace, and when Ariel found out, her heart was shattered.
During the wedding, the mermaid was willing to help with holding the princess’s train. After that, the whole night she was dancing her heart out and enjoying everything. Even though she felt shattered knowing that it wasn’t her marrying the prince. But off in the distance, the mermaid saw her sisters, who came right up behind her to chop off all of her beautiful, long red hair. They explained shortly after they did this to give it to Ursula so she could break the curse, so Ariel didn’t have to die. But to do that, she had to kill the prince if she ever wanted her tail back. While she sat there and thought about it, Ariel knew that wasn’t right, so she threw the knife into the water, and went down with the knife in the water, thinking she would just be done. But in the end, Ariel became the daughter of air, which means she could get an immortal soul if she did good deeds for three hundred years, but also get her voice back. After that, she was able to achieve everything she wished and was able to live with the prince and do what she loved best.
