Barbie is a one-hour and 54-minute long movie that teaches about the struggles that women go through all over the world. Barbie starts by telling us that before Barbies were invented, women were stuck being housewives, but when Barbie came around, that all changed. Barbies helped women worldwide get inspired to get better jobs and be whatever they wanted. The scene cuts to stereotypical, “classic” Barbie enjoying life in Barbie Land and having a dance party, but she starts thinking about death while she is dancing. The morning after, everything goes wrong for Stereotypical Barbie and her feet go flat, instead of the typical Barbie high-heel arch. Another Barbie tells her that she needs to visit Weird Barbie.
Barbie goes to Weird Barbie’s house, where she is told that she needs to go to the real world and find her owner because she is transferring her bad thoughts to her and making her more human. So Barbie goes to say bye to all her Barbie friends and starts her journey to the real world. While Barbie is in her car, she finds that Ken has snuck into her car and is forced to take him with her. When they get to the real world, Barbie realizes that women aren’t really in charge of the world but men are, and while that is happening, Ken realizes the same thing and decides that he needs to go back to Barbie Land and change a couple of things.
When Ken leaves and Barbie is alone, she goes to the school where she thinks her owner is, but when she gets there, she sees Sasha and goes up to her. Sasha makes her cry, and Barbie runs away. When Barbie gets to the front of the school, she is taken away by Mattel workers. Sasha’s mom, Gloria, realizes that the stereotypical Barbie is her Barbie, so she chases the car to headquarters. When Barbie gets to Mattel, she realizes that they want to put her in a box and hide her from the world, so she runs away into Gloria’s car. Barbie tells Gloria and Sasha about Barbie Land and then takes them there, but when they get there, things are different.
Ken had turned Barbie Land into Ken Land and brainwashed all the other Barbies into being the “perfect girlfriends.” Barbie goes to Weird Barbie to try to find a solution, and they conclude that Gloria telling them the struggles of the real world is the only way to get them back. So they slowly gather all the Barbies, undo the brainwashing, and make a plan to have the Kens fight each other to distract them and get Barbie Land back. The Kens fall for the plan, fight each other, and lose the right to Ken Land. Once Barbie Land is back to normal, Stereotypical Barbie realizes that she doesn’t feel like a Barbie, so she gets permission from the creator of Barbie to stay in the real world, and the movie ends with Barbie going to a gynecologist.
To sum up, Barbie is a good movie to watch if you want a good laugh while also learning about serious world problems but can also be watched by the whole family.
