Lauryn Hill and Damian Marley both had stories and life in their music. Lauryn Hill brought struggle, obstacles, and voice to her songs. Very similar to Damian Marley, He had deep, thoughtful, and meaningful lyrics in his songs. Both artists brought such a strong message in these two songs both tying into life and how each person had struggles of their own.
The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill Lauryn Hill (1998):
“ And life squeezes, so tightly that I can’t breathe” is Only the second line of Lauryn’s song with a tone set for the song. Becoming stressed and overwhelmed with life can be easily done by growing up or simply living every day. More into the song, You feel more of a powering feeling as she says “And I made up my mind to define my own destiny”. This line itself is very motivating and can be achieved when feeling overwhelmed in situations. Briefly, She begins to talk about her environment and asks “…where the fire went”. Growing up in a constantly changing environment is difficult, especially for young adults and teenagers. While having a relatable and motivational message intertwined in one song is what made this song so enjoyable with it also being understandable especially since the 90s was such a time filled with conflict But also at the same time bringing peace with a constant voice in music!
There for you
Damian Marley (2005):
“…Negative thinking, Don’t waste your thoughts. Verbal conflict is a waste of words. Physical conflict is a waste of flesh…” Already opening his song with a strong message of being able to be peaceful with one another, being able to have a calm and understanding conversation with others. “People will always be who they want, and That’s what really makes the world go round”. Diversity will always be around, In a person’s personality or appearance. That line conveys the amount of difference and uniqueness that lives in the world. Often others might put down being unique but being yourself and coming up with all sorts of ideas keeps this world running. “Unconditional love is scarce…” People often take advantage of love or don’t recognize it right away consequently people might not feel that unconditional love as they might feel they deserve. Having the right to be able to express yourself without feeling loved and recognized is such a big topic that really needs a deeper understanding. His talent of being able to merge personal and open messages in one song can make a person feel very drawn to its lyrics by having something to think about while listening. “…You gave precious life to me, so I live my life for you…you’ve always been there for me, and so I’ll be there for you”. Giving a personal perspective allows the listener to feel more of the song. Having something or someone to think about while listening to it gives a whole new dimension and meaning.
