Skyler Randleman, Writer

Drake is one of the best going from Lyrical rap to melodic rap (Pop rap, also called pop hip hop, melodic hip hop, or melodic rap, is a genre of music fusing the rhythm-based lyricism of hip hop music with pop music’s preference for melodious vocals and catchy tunes. The lyrics are often lighthearted, with choruses similar to those heard in pop music). And he also has the most variety going from singing to Drill  (Drill is a style of trap music that originated in the South Side of Chicago in early 2010. It is defined by its dark, violent, nihilistic lyrical content and ominous trap-influenced beats. Artists within the genre have been noted for their style of lyricism and association with crime in Chicago.)

“Demons” is my favorite song by Drake where he departs from his normal singing rap and takes more of a UK Drill type of beat where he collaborates with Fivio Foreign and Solsa Geek. The song talks about his friends, One of my favorite lines on the track is “All my G’s are blessed, we check-in for themWhich means to me that all of his friends are blessed and we still check with them knowing that blessings don’t solve everything.

“ 6 God” Is one of my favorite songs even though it came out earlier in his career in 2014. The song is a turn-up song to crank in the car so you can get a boost of adrenaline before you go to a football game. My favorite line on the track is “Nobody really likes us except for us” Which means you don’t have to try to impress anybody. The only person that has to like you is you.

“Portland” is a song talking about himself and how he made it and he’s never going down and how he pushed himself so hard to get to that point. My favorite line on the song is “being rich when I’m forty, man, I’m tryna make it now”, this means always trying to make it even if you’re not of age and trying to make it while you’re still young so you can live the best life that you can. I also like it because it’s a song about Portland, Oregon where I was born.

“Summer Sixteen” Is a diss track on Kanye West Talking about how he took over the city even though he’s not from there and he mentions the six a lot in this song in reference to Toronto, Canada. This also hit two birds with one stone because he says 666 in the song which means the Devil, so when he says 666 he’s talking about how he’s about to go evil on them or have rage. My favorite line from the song is “How am I keeping it real by keeping this s**t to myself?” which means people need to speak up and not be silent. You have a voice, use it, don’t be silent.

“War” By Drake is one of my favorite songs because it goes back to the drill type style where he talks about his life. My favorite line on the track is “I didn’t trust no one, swore gyal lined me” because in this line Drake is talking about how he doesn’t trust anybody anymore because of his past experiences. I relate to this because it’s really hard for me to open up to people after what’s happened to me with some of my friends so I tend to stay with the same group and don’t really move.

From going from melodic to drill to lyrical Drake Is one of the best when it comes to being able to be very diverse in his music.
