September 27, 2020
5 seconds of summer (also known as 5sos), an Australian band, has been on the rise. They’re a pop band with multiple albums out.
5 seconds of summer’s new album has to do with love that isn’t mutual, missing youth, and acceptance of things that are lost. The band includes Luke Hemmings (lead singer), Ashton Irwin (drums), Calum Hood (bass), and Michael Clifford (guitarist). They first gained popularity from their 2014 hit, “She looks so perfect”. This song was catchy, and the beat was nice so it was pretty obvious they were going to get popular. This song was such a hit that they won “Song of the year” at the 2014 ARIA awards.
Overall, 5sos seems to not be slowing down even after being in the music industry for almost a decade. They still have a very large and growing fanbase and mean very much to thousands of people. All of their albums have had an overwhelming amount of care and dedication put into them. Even as their sound changes, fans remain. They truly are an amazing group of musicians, no matter what challenges have happened they have survived and remained an inspiration to people everywhere. Even their first album had a big impact on people around the world They started with nothing and now they are an extremely popular band and they deserve it because of how hard they have worked.
Their second album, “Sounds good, feels good” focuses more on mental health and how vulnerable it can make a person feel. Their song “Jet Black Heart” truly spoke out on how anxiety and depression affect a person. According to an article by Fuse.tv, it lets people know that they were not alone in how they felt. They had many other songs that also spoke out on the feelings that mental illnesses cause.
They took a break for a while to reevaluate their songs and style. Then came back in 2018 with their hit album “Youngblood”. This album had a completely different sound and style to what they had been doing before. In “Sounds good, feels good” it was more a rock-centric sound as opposed to their new album having more of a pop feel. According to Capitol Records, their hit single titled “Youngblood” hit Spotify’s global top 10 and topped Australia’s official singles chart for three consecutive weeks. This shows that this change of sound was going to be a new era of 5sos.
Their latest album “CALM” was a bit of a shocker to fans. It has a more noticeable amount of maturity throughout the lyrics and overall sound. Daily Cal does a great job of explaining the overall change of sound as compared to their earlier albums. One song that sticks out is “Old me”, it shows that even though we grow older and may have regrets about things we have done, that makes us who we are as people. Overall this album truly is a great thing, all of the songs are their own sound as well as being intertwined with each other.
