Trump’s State of the Union Address 2/5/2019
February 28, 2019
The State Of The Union Address. It is important for every president to address his fellow Americans, and in these trying times and rocky years during President Trump’s controversies, it is monumental for the President to quell the fires of revolution and turn off the burner. Trump’s address did not put faith in the House and there were some inaccuracies from the speech itself, but it did restore faith (even a little bit) to the American people, with his approval rating rising.
On February 5th, President Trump spoke in the Chamber of the House of Representatives. “Less than 1 year has passed since I first stood at this podium, in this majestic chamber, to speak on behalf of the American People — and to address their concerns, their hopes, and their dreams,” started President Trump. President Trump also stated that “…we nearly doubled the standard deduction for everyone” and that they also “doubled the child tax credit.” Both claims are true, as was confirmed by The Motley Fool that taxes like for the Head of Household would be changed by $350 more. This is not surprising after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 paired together could cut your tax bill.
Trump also mentioned women and their success in acquiring a better position in the workforce, saying that “All Americans can be proud that we have more women in the workforce than ever before,” which garnered praise from Democrats. Even though rare, it seems like they agree on something. However, it might just be to be on better ground to put the previous comments on women in the past down.
However, not all the things they claimed are true. Sometimes in Trump’s speech, it seems almost random or skewed facts (either with numbers or plain statements) which made his address feel like empty words. For example, when Trump said “We have spent more than $7 trillion dollars in the Middle East. As a candidate for president, I pledged a new approach. Great nations do not fight endless wars.” This is not completely right, as we have only spent around $5-6 trillion according to a study done by Watson Institute. There are these misstated facts scattered around his entire speech, potentially dulling his words when one looks between the lines for a much closer inspection.
Finally, Trump’s speech also raises concern among the world theater. When Trump stated that “As a candidate for president, I pledged a new approach. Great nations do not fight endless wars” and “As part of our defense, we must modernize and rebuild our nuclear arsenal, hopefully never having to use it” the words tread on dangerous territory. After the Cold War, the United States became the sole superpower on the Earth. Dealing with people like Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden since 1991, but if the U.S were to step down from interventionism then what would that mean to the world? We are the world police, but if we do not intervene then what will happen to our hard work as a nation during World War 2 and beyond that?
