Coraline (2009) Movie Review

Alondra Pineda, Writer

A quick summary of the movie Coraline – a girl named Coraline Jones moves into a new house with her parents. While exploring the house, she discovers a small door which leads her into the “other world” where she meets her “other mother,” more commonly known as the Beldam. While going back and forth throughout the two worlds, she realizes that the Beldam wants to sew buttons into her eyes. The only reason behind it is because once Coraline has the buttons sewed into her eyes, the Beldam has control over Coraline and is able to eat her soul. Coraline has to defeat the Beldam as she tries to escape the other world. Eventually, Coraline manages to lock the Beldam in the destroyed world and makes it back to her own world safely.

The movie Coraline has many great aspects. One thing I really started to enjoy while I started to watch the movie more often is the animation, which is 3D stop-motion animation. I recently found out on an article from the website The Hollywood Reporter that the creators deserve so much credit for making this movie – they made 6,333 faces made out of clay which takes so much effort. They were able to make this movie kid-friendly but also pretty creepy as well. This movie became one of my favorites instantly just because of the plot of the story. An old woman creating a fake world to take children in and convince them to sew button into their eyes and then eat their souls, then managing to make it kid-friendly – that’s pretty amazing. Coraline is pretty famous for the theories surrounding it, and the plot holes in the movie are a good thing as they allow people to make their own theories about the movie. The theories make the movie better since you can look at the movie in many different ways which might even help you make sense of the movie.

This movie is a great thing and there isn’t really anything bad I could point out throughout the movie. However, if there was one thing I could say I didn’t like about the movie, it would be the major plot holes which you can’t really figure out with theories or anything else. One major plot hole is the end of the movie, where the cat travels to the “other world” and then it ends. That doesn’t sound so bad when you think about it, but it’s the idea that Coraline blocked up all the entries to the “other world” plus even destroyed it, yet the cat travels to it behind a post. After that happened, everyone started to wonder what happened or what was going to happen after.

Things I noticed while watching the movie but isn’t incredibly interesting is that people who watch Coraline a lot should know that there are many theories on this movie since there are so many plot holes throughout the movie. Also, this movie shows the people who are energetic wearing colorful clothing, and the people who were less energetic and kind of boring wore more grayish and darker colors, this might mean that the people who dress colorfully might be more helpful towards Coraline in the movie.

Overall, this movie is great – everything about it is exceptional. This movie has many great things such as their animation choice, the plot, the character choices and how they are represented in the movie, little messages left behind, theories that come along with the movie. Coraline deserves more recognition as it really isn’t talked about now. This movie should never die considering how amazing it is.
