Winter Informal, What is It All About?

Reed Cunningham, Writer

Winter informal, what’s with the name change? Many of you may have noticed the name switch of the winter formal dance this year, and you’re probably wondering why that is and what other changes have happened. The purpose of rebranding this year was simple, the members of ASB have seen that the school has never had a relaxed dance. ASB wants a dance where people can come casually dressed and have a good time, without all the pressure winter formal used to have. Behavioral issues in recent dances have also lead to the need for a better dance environment to determine how future events will be managed. Students can come to the dance dressed in what they want and enjoy the games set up by ASB as well.

Of course with all these new things going on it’s important to keep in mind one of the focus of the changes, safety, and fun. There are a few rules participants have to follow before they can attend. There are the obvious ones like no alcohol or tobacco products allowed or anyone under the influence of them, but this year bags and bottles won’t be allowed either, and a signed permission slip is needed from everyone who wishes to attend. This year there is also a newer rule that students must follow, no mosh style dancing. Moshing has lead to injuries at previous dances, as well as the destruction of property, so for Winter Informal this year the students of ASB have decided to crack down and ban it entirely. These new rules can be viewed on ASB’s Instagram, and any member of ASB can answer any questions you or your friends might have.

So when is all of this going down? The dance takes place on January 26, starts at eight and goes to eleven. To get a signed permission slip for dance attendance just stop by Mr. Kirkman’s room, number 1218, to get a copy. Guests bringing a friend from another school still need a permission slip for outside students that can be found in the front office.

The members of ASB want students to know that this dance is not only important for future events, but the behavior of students attending is especially important because if rules are not followed, there will be no prom this year. This dance is, in a way, a test to see how students respect school events. If rules are broken or students start behaving recklessly, it’s important for them to know that there will be consequences. Overall, have fun and stay safe, we hope to see you all there.
