Boxing was also created for the need of physical combat, evolving from hand-to-hand combat. Canelo started practicing boxing in 2003 at only thirteen years old. Canelo was originally born in Guadalajara, Mexico. When he turned five years old, his family moved to Juanacatlán Jalisco, Mexico. At the start of his career, Canelo had an upcoming fight against Abraham Gonzalez at the age of 15. Canelo confirmed in one of his interviews that he wasn’t nervous but excited to do his first “pro fight”. The match took place in a small venue in 2005, which was the first of many boxing matches where Canelo won by a knockout. After that match, Canelo has had sixty-eight professional boxing matches; out of all those matches, he has only lost three, had two withdrawn, and won the rest with knockouts.
Canelo’s career was inspired by his older brothers Rigoberto Alvarez, Ramon Alvarez, Gonzalo Alavarez, Victor Alvarez, and Daniel Alvarez. Canelo was part of eight kids in his house; he has six brothers and one sister. Only six of his siblings continued the tradition of doing professional boxing. Canelo’s only sister, Elda Alvarez, was the only sibling out of Canelo’s family who did not pursue boxing as a career. Elda played a big role in Canelo’s life by keeping him on track on the way to his career. Canelo started boxing classes when he was 13 years old, when his brother handed him some boxing gloves. After two years, Canelo went pro and has been a professional boxer since the age of 15.
