With the 2025 MLB season newly underway, there has been a revolutionary change in the batter’s box that baseball has never yet seen. A new type of bat that has shocked the MLB world, bringing loads of success along with it. The New York Yankees have been the perfect show for fans of the game, with several of their stars rolling with these new bat archetypes. Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Paul Goldschmidt, and several others on the Bronx roster have started the season using these bats. The Yankees displayed the true power these bats have had on the game, tying an MLB record of 15 home runs in their first 3 games of the season. While these bats have been nothing short of thrilling to watch for fans, it has also presented other teams and fans with worry on whether or not they abide by the rulebook of the MLB. However, lead engineer Aaron Leanhardt assures fans that the bat is well within the parameters of the rulebook, which will allow these bats to continue to be used.
Bats have been something that has been very stagnant or similar since the beginning of the game. While players have had customizations in design to their bat or maybe a different handle shape for feel, the actual structural integrity of the average bat in the MLB has yet to be toyed with until now. Personally, I love to see changes like these in the game of baseball. I think that while this game already has so much to offer, changes like this make it exciting for not only spectators and fans, but also players of the game. It shows that baseball is still an adaptable game and nothing is set in stone for any one player.
The new bats also give the MLB more chances at increasing viewership, which is something that they haven’t done in a long while. The MLB, although enjoyed by many, is the least-watched sport on television amongst all of the major sports. This is because the game hasn’t changed or evolved much since it was created, and it has a relatively slower pace in comparison to most other sports played today. I believe that these new bats could bring in viewers if they continue bringing home runs for teams.
These bats also provide a new variety for hitters that they have never had in the past. Hitters like Aaron Judge, who have been known to be successful in the box in the past, have stuck with the original bat and have yet to make the change to the new toy in the league. While this may just be routine or superstition, some players have come out and said they don’t agree with the use of the torpedo bats as they believe it’s “ruining the game.” Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals has not been very fond of the transition to this new model within the league. Overall, these new bats provide a unique experience for those watching and playing the game of baseball, and I am so excited to be able to be a part of watching this game be revolutionized.
