The movie Thirteen, which spans 1 hour and 40 minutes, centers on a 7th-grade girl who finds herself immersed in a world of sex and drugs. The movie Thirteen starts by showing us Tracy, the main character, and her friend Evie, high and slapping each other because the drug made them unable to feel pain. The scene then cuts to 4 months before, where Tracy walks her dog with her friend Noel before school and calls for her brother Mason because they need to head to school. When Tracy gets to school, she realizes she is a loser in other people’s eyes, so when she gets home, she decides to go through her things and throw away all the things considered childish. Her mom takes her to buy new clothes, and the next day at school, Evie, the most popular girl, invites her to shop at Melrose after school; Tracy agrees to go.
When Tracy gets home, she tries to call Evie, but she doesn’t answer, so she decides that she’s going to go to Melrose and try to meet her there. When Tracy finds Evie, she is with her friend Astrid. Tracy tells them that she only brought $10, but then she realizes that they are stealing everything, so she decides to steal a lady’s purse and spend all her money. When Tracy gets home, she sees that her mom’s boyfriend is there and gets mad because she doesn’t like him. The next day, Tracy’s mom picks her and Evie up from school and takes them to Melrose, where she and Tracy argue because she won’t let her buy the pants she wants, so they go home. Evie takes Tracy to the park with her friends, where they get high, and Mason has to take Tracy home because their mom is worried. The next day, Evie takes Tracy to get her belly button pierced along with her tongue. All of the influence from Evie starts to make Tracy act up; she talks back to her mom and is mean to everyone, and that makes Mel, Tracy’s mom, worried. Tracy, sad with everything going on around her, starts to self-harm. One day, they go to Evie’s house and invite boys over. They make out with the boys, and you can kind of see Tracy reflecting on her actions, but not doing anything to fix them.
When Tracy gets home, she gets into an argument with her mom because she keeps helping people for free even though they are struggling. Mel decides to take Evie and Tracy to the cinema, but Tracy and Evie run away to a party. Tracy gets drugged by a guy, but her mom takes her home before anything happens. Mel decides that Tracy needs to be sent to live with her dad. Tarcy finds out and doesn’t want to go, so Mel lets her stay. After a while, Evie and Tracy start to distance themselves, and one day, Evie’s aunt tells Mel about everything that Tracy has been doing to make Evie look innocent. She finds out that Tracy self-harms and starts to cry and comforts her. Evie and her aunt leave, and the scene ends with Tracy and her mom hugging. The end of the movie shows Tracy finally at peace.
In conclusion, Thirteen is a good movie to watch if you want to see a teenage angsty film about teenagers going through hard times, and you never know, you might relate to it.
