Does High School Prepare You For Adulthood?
September 29, 2019
School is important, there is no doubt about that, but I think that there are things that could be changed. Yes, classes like Math and English help prepare you for future jobs or lifestyles you might have but I think that there are still some things missing. Once people are out of high school and start their independent life they usually haven’t learned how to pay rent or do taxes. And those things are very important to everyone’s life. There are still some flaws in the school system and ways that could be better. You don’t learn how to deal with emotions or conflict, and those skills are important to learn so you can keep important connections with people in your life.
I love school, I love connecting with people and I also enjoy most of the classes but that doesn’t mean all the classes I attend actually helped prepare me for my life after high school, especially if I’m not going to be using the knowledge I gained in the job I will have in the future. Mental knowledge is just as important as physical knowledge. Knowing how to deal with the emotions I feel and what to do when conflict appears is important to know. How to get up after life pushed you down, you won’t need Math, Science, or English to understand and have the strength to keep going when you feel as though you are stuck.
High School has flaws but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. It’s important to learn basic math and how to write. It helps you figure out what you want to do in college and also helps you meet friends and get connected with something. I honestly feel as though school is important and teaches important things but I think that it has room to grow and could change some things. There are ways that school could better help us prepare for college and our life after that too.

I 100% agree with this article! In my opinion, a lot of the mandatory classes the school gives us don’t help us for the world to come. If we are learning math problems for how to find the degree of a triangle, but want a job as a park ranger which has nothing to do with geometry (or some other example) that doesn’t help us in the long run. I also like that you pointed out the fact that the school doesn’t prepare us for having to do taxes or take out loans which are greatly needed in adult life.
