Calligraphy, an art relating to writing in creative ways many wouldn’t think of. Believed to have originated from China, the art has continued to be relevant even in modern days. However, this art has more attention in China than in other places, but that doesn’t mean many don’t do it. In fact there are a few people who’ve gained popularity and fame from it, however, it mainly comes from viral videos online. So, I’ve tried my best and I’ve stumbled across a handful of well-known calligraphers.

Martina Flor

Martina Flor is a graphic designer well known for the art on book covers and other projects. Her artstyle gives feminine vibes and has use of light colors. Her style always seems cheery and related to positive topics. Her choice of words and colors has similarities to care and love, giving her a liking to the public eye.

Martina Flor has a rating of 5 stars as an artist in Berlin and works like every other ordinary person. And though not many participate in this style of art, it doesn’t mean there’s nobody who doesn’t.

Retna is a unique kind of artist. He’s mainly known for his graffitti and his style involving a mix of calligraphy styles and making it one. When finished, his art resembles a mysterious and eerie message, which is the main reason for his public liking. Though, it doesn’t have an appeal to many, knowing people don’t really dislike the feeling of confusion, amusement, or fear when relating to art. But that’s his style, and he does it well.

Retna is currently over 30 years old and lives in California, and his most recent work was a collaboration with the Seattle Opera in order to design stage sets in 2018.

Seb Lester, a calligrapher who’s well known for hand drawn calligraphy and remaking brand logos. Usually, his activity is shown on videos, which at times can go viral and have alluring titles like, “Most Satisfying Calligraphy Videos.” These kinds of videos reach over millions of views so it may be possible you could have seen some of his work. Other than that, Lester also works on book covers and other works that much of the public doesn’t know, such as the request he got from NASA for a logo design.

L’Atlas is another graffiti artist who participates in a bold style of calligraphy. Though he may not be the most popular, his calligraphy surely is unique. Resembling illusions, mazes, shapes, and sometimes just sprayed work. And though it may not seem like much, he has much more work like painting, photography, video artistry, and editing for documentaries. In short, he is much more than just his art.

This style of calligraphy always catches my eye and seems more creative, though it may only be my liking to his art.

I feel calligraphy is somewhat underrated and only gets attention for how “satisfying it is” and yet nobody cares to try. But even so, the effort people put in into this style is impressive and inspiring, knowing that, I know that’s my satisfaction.

In short, calligraphy should be tried rather than watched, it is much more pleasurable when done by your hands rather than someone else’s.
